Migraine causes attacks of headaches, often with feel'ing sick or vomiting. Treatment options
include: avoiding possible triggers, painkillers, anti-inflammatory painkillers, antisickness
medicines, and triptan medicines. A medicine to prevent migraine attacks is an option if the
attacks are frequent or severe.
What is migra'ine?
Migra'ine is a condition that causes episodes (attacks) of headaches. Other symptoms such as feeling sick
(nausea) or vomiting are also common. Between migraine attacks, the symptoms go completely.
Who gets migraine?
Migra'ine is common. About 1 in 4 women, and about 1 in 12 men, develop migra'ine at some point in their life. It most commonly first starts in childhood or as a young adult. Some people have frequent attacks sometimes several a week. Others have attacks only now and then. Some people may go for years between attacks. In some people, the migraine attacks stop in later adult life. However, in some cases the attacks persist throughout life.
What are the types and symptoms of migraine?
There are two main types of migraine attack: migraine attack without aura (sometimes called common migraine) and migraine attack with aura (sometimes called classic migraine).
Migraine without aura:
This is the most common type of migraine. Symptoms include the following:
• The tleadache is usually on one side of the head, typically at the front or side. Sometimes it is on
both sides of the head. Sometimes it starts on one side, and then spreads all over the head. The pain
is moderate or severe and is often described as throbbing or pulsating. Movements of the head may make it worse. It often beg-ins -in the morning, but may begin at any time of day or night. Typically, it gradually gets worse and peaks after 2-12 hours, then gradually eases off. However, it can last from 4 to 72 hours.
• Other symptoms that are common include: feeling sick (nausea), vomiting, you may not like bright lights or loud noises, and you may just want to lie in a dark room.
• Other symptoms that sometimes occur include: be'ing off food, blurred vision, poor concentration,
stuffy nose, hunger, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, passing lots of urine, going pale, sweating, scalp
tenderness, and sensations of heat or cold.
Migraine with aura:
About 1 in 4 people with migraine have migraine with aura. The symptoms are the same as those described above (migraine without aura), but also include an aura (warning sign) before the headache begins.
• Visual aura is the most common type of aura. Examples include: a temporary loss of part of vision, flashes of Light, objects may seem to rotate, shake, or both.
• Numbness and 'pins and needles' are the second most common type of aura. Numbness usually starts in the hand, travels up the arm, then involves the face, lips, and tongue. The leg is sometimes involved.
• Problems with speech are the third most common type of aura.
• Other types of aura include: an odd smell, food cravings, a feeling of wellbeing, other odd sensations.
One of the above auras may develop, or several may occur one after each other. Each aura usually lasts just a few minutes before going, but can last up to 60 minutes. The aura usually goes before the headache begins.The headache usually develops within 60 minutes of the end of the aura, but it may develop a lot sooner than that - often straight afterwards. Sometimes, just the aura occurs and no headache follows.
Most people who have migraine with aura also have episodes of migraine without aura.

دردِشقیقہ کیا ہے؟
دردِشقیقہ سردرد کے سلسلوں (حملوں) کاباعث بنتا ہے۔ دیگر علامات جیسا کہ گرانی ٗ طبع (Nausea) یا متلی کی کیفیت بھی عام ہیں۔دردِ شقیقہ کے حملوں کے درمیان وقفے میں، علامات مکمّل طور سے غیر موثر ہو جاتی ہیں۔
دردِشقیقہ کسے ہو سکتا ہے؟
دردِشقیقہ عام ہے، تقریباٌ ہر ۴ میں ایک خاتون اور ہر ۱۲ میں ایک مرد زندگی کے کسی حصّے میں دردِشقیقہ میں مبتلا ہو سکتے ہیں۔اس کی ابتدا عام طور سے بچپن یا ابتدا ئے بلوغت میں ہوتی ہے۔ بعض افراد پر متعدد اور بعض اوقات تو ہفتے میں متعدد بار حملے ہوسکتے ہیں جبکہ، بعض پر شازونادر ہی ہوتے ہیں جبکہ دیگر کیلیٗے حملوں کا وقفہ برسوں پر محیط ہوتا ہے۔بعض لوگوں میں دردِشقیقہ کے حملے اوا خرِبلوغت میں تھم جاتے ہیں، جبکہ بعض اوقات حملے تا حیات برقرار رہتے ہیں۔
دردِشقیقہ کی اقسام اور علامات کیا ہیں؟
دردِشقیقہ کے حملوں کی دو چیدہ اقسام ہیں ۔ غیر انتباہی دردِشقیقہ( اکثروبیشتر عمومی دردِشقیقہ Common Migraineکہلاتا ہے) اور انتباہی دردِشقیقہ (اکثرباستانی دردِ شقیقہ Classical Migraine کہلاتا ہے)۔
غیر انتباہی دردِشقیقہ (Migraine without aura)
یہ دردِشقیقہ کی انتہائی عمومی قسم ہے۔ علامات میں درج ذیل شامل ہیں:
سر درد عموماٌ سر کے ایک جانب ہوتی ہے۔ عام طور سے سامنے یا کسی ایک رخ، بعض اوقات دونو ں جانب ہوسکتی ہے، جبکہ بعض اوقات ایک رخ سے شروع ہوتی ہے اورپورے سر میں پھیل جاتی ہے۔ درد اکثر دھڑکتی ہوئی یا ٹمٹماتی ہوئی بیان کی جاتی ہے، جسے سر کی حرکت شدید کر سکتی ہے۔ بیشتر یہ صبح کے وقت شروع ہوتی ہے لیکن دن یا رات کے کسی بھی پہر شروع ہو سکتی ہے۔عام طور سے بتدریج شدّت اختیار کرتی ہے اور ۲ سے ۱۲ گھنٹے کے دوران انتہا ئی صورت اختیار کرلیتی ہے۔جبکہ ۴ سے ۷۲ گھیٹے تک جاری رہ سکتی ہے۔
دیگر عام علامات بشمول ذیل کے ہیں: گرانی ٗ طبع (Nausea)، متلی، تیز روشنی اور بلند آوازوں سے بیزاری، اور اندھیرے کمرے میں پڑے رہنے کو طبیعت ما ئل ہونا۔
دیگر علامات جو بعض اوقات واقع ہوتی ہیں بشمول ذیل ہیں: کم خوراکی، بینائی میں دھندلاپن، بے توجہی، بہتی ناک ، بھوک ، اتسارِ شکم (Diaarhoea) ، دردِشکم، پیشاب کی زیادتی، زرد پن، پسینہ آنا، سر کی جلد میں نرمی کا احساس، اور گرم سرد ہونے کا احساس۔
انتباہی دردِشقیقہ (Migraine with aura) :
دردِ شقیہ میں مبتلا ہر ۴ افراد سے ایک میں انتباہی دردِ شقیقہ پایا جاتا ہے۔ علامات درج بالا (انتباہی دردِشقیقہ) جیسی ہی ہوتی ہیں لیکن درد شروع ہونے سے قبل ایک انتباہی علامت (Aura) بھی شامل ہوتی ہے۔
) بصری انتباہ (Visual aura) انتباہ کی عام تر قسم ہے، مثلاٌ: جزوی بصارت کی عارضی بندش، روشنی کی جھلکیاں، اشیا کی گردش، لرزش یا کھولتے ہوےٗ ہونے کا احساس ۔
) سن ہونا اور سو ؤیاں چٹخنا ، انتباہ کی دوسری عام قسم ہے:سن پن ہاتھ سے شروع ہوتا ہے، بازو کو متاثر کرتا ہے اور چہرے ، لب اور زبان کو آ لیتا ہے۔ بعض اوقات ٹانگ بھی متاثر ہو سکتی ہے۔
) صوتی مساٗیل(Speech problems) انتباہ کی تیسری عام قسم ہے۔
) دیگر انتباہات میں غیر عادی بو آنا، خوشگوار احساس، اور دیگر ناواقف احساسات شامل ہیں۔
درج بالا انتباہات میں سے کوئی ایک سامنے آ سکتا ہے یا پھر یکےٌ بعد دیگرے کیٗ ایک واقع ہو سکتے ہیں۔ ہر انتباہ تحلیل ہونے سے قبل ،عام طور سے ،چند منٹ تک قائم رہتا ہے مگر ۶۰ منٹ تک بھی برقرار رہ سکتا ہے۔ انتباہ عموماٌ سر دردشروع ہونے سے قبل تحلیل ہو جاتا ہے ۔ سر درد، بطورِعام، انتباہ کے تحلیل ہونے سے تقریباٌ۶۰ منٹ بعد شروع ہوتا ہے، لیکن اس سے خاصا جلد بھی شروع ہو سکتا ہے بعض اوقات قطعی طور پر ذیلی بھی ہو سکتا ہے، جبکہ بعض اوقات صرف انتباہ کے بعد سر درد نہیں ہوتا۔ انتباہی دردِشقیقہ میں مبتلا افراد کی اکثریت کو غیرانتباہی دردِ شقیقہ کے حملے بھی ہوتے ہیں۔
