The film Alexander Nevsky Battle is a cooperative effort between the Kazakh and Russian private production studios, Nikola Film and Aldongar Productions.
The film covers the historical period when Russia was under pressure from Ghengis Khan’s Golden Horde and a military threat from Sweden. After premiering in Moscow on 24th April, the film was brought to Almaty, Kazakhstan. Its opening night in the southern capital took place on 30th April at the Arman Film Theatre.
Prior to the Kazakh premiere, Anton Pampushny, who plays the Russian prince, Alexander, talked about the film:
Q: Anton, Almaty is not the first place that the film was shown. A Moscow audience and film critics saw it the week before. How did the Russian people receive the film?
A: I attended the opening night in Moscow. We received very good feedback. We had a call from Saint Petersburg yesterday and they had the same reaction there.
Q: There is another film, Alexander Nevsky, directed by Sergei Eisenstein back in 1939: Essentially, it describes the same events. Has Alexander Nevsky Battle been compared to the old masterpiece, and you to Nikolai Cherkassov?
A: One famous film critic, unfortunately I have forgotten her name, suggests not comparing those films because they are so completely different and cover two completely different time periods in the Russian prince’s life. The difference between the two films lies also in the ideological message. Eisenstein’s film was created and released in 1938-39, at the start of World War II, so the director tried to fill his version with ideological content. Our film, I would say, is an attempt to “humanise” Nevsky.
Q: Both Kazakhstan and Russia are currently passing through a boom of historical films. After each premiere, the press starts a lively discussion of the mistakes made by film directors. In your opinion, should a feature film strictly follow a historical timeline and describe the full historical context, or not?
A: Each director or person involved in the film production process, I believe, has the right to interpret. I am pretty positive about the interpretation of history in films. Of course, it is possible to reproduce historical context but the laws of contemporary film do not always allow it. You cannot put events that took years to occur into a one-and-a-half-hour film and be chronologically accurate. I have to admit that our film also has some elements added by the writers, but, generally we tried to remain in keeping with history.
Q: In historical literature and films Mongols are usually portrayed as cruel conquerors. One of the key figures in the film is the Mongol Ambassador played by Kazakh actor Tungyshbai Zhamankulov. Many people in Kazakhstan are proud of being descendants of Ghengis Khan, won’t the film be offensive to them?
A: You cannot escape historical facts. The time of the Golden Horde was very complicated for Russia. As history shows, Alexander’s policy was very wise, he did not try to behave aggressively with the Mongols, he took time and managed to transform Russia into a state that could resist the Horde. In the context of the film, the Mongols seem more like friends than enemies: the Mongol Ambassador helps Alexander to avoid aggression from the administration of the Horde at the same time as giving him a chance to win the Nevsky battle.
Q: You yourself were born in Kazakhstan. What kind of actor do you consider yourself to be – Kazakh or Russian?
A: I do not add the word “Russian” or “Kazakh” before my profession. I am just an actor. But if I could divide my heart into pieces, one definitely belongs to Kazakhstan. I love the city where I was born: Astana, I grew up and lived there for my first eighteen years and I moved to Russia when I finished college. There I have started another life. But when I come here, the Kazakh sky seems the dearest to me.
Q: Do you think that Alexander Nevsky Battle will further the development of the Kazakh film industry?
A: I hope it will. I think that the integration of the Kazakh and Russian film industries is the right way to go. For that we should thank the executive producer of the film, Aliya Uvalzhanova, because she has done a lot to assist this integration. This topic matters both for her and for the Kazakh investors and I will do what I can in order to further this process no matter where I am – Moscow, Los Angeles or Astana.
