I Tromsø blir dagen 10 minutter kortere utover høsten, og til slutt står tromsøværingene igjen med en blå ettertanke midt på dagen i desember. Men når dagslyset forsvinner tilføres kulturen ekstra adrenalin, restaurantene fylles av høylydte, glade mennesker og byens legendariske natteliv øker takten.
De heftigste lyseffektene står imidlertid nattens dronning, nordlyset for. Lett på tå danser de grønne strålene over nattehimmelen, av og til eksploderer de i rosa og fiolett. Aurora er imidlertid en lunefull dame, og hennes beilere må regne med lange timer ute i kulda. Nordlyset er synlig fra august til april.
Festivaler:
I Tromsø er det én eller to festivaler hver eneste måned. De kommende månedene er dette høydepunktene:
I september arrangeres Tromsø Stumfilmfestival i Nord-Europas eldste kino. Oktober kan tilby litteraturfestivalen Ordkalotten, elektronikafestivalen Insomnia og fotofestivalen Polar Fokus.
Opplevelser:
Tromsøs kompakte, fargerike sentrum av gamle trehus og moderne blomster er lett å ta seg fram i. I byen finner man Polaria, ett arktisk opplevelsessenter med sel og fisk, og Ishavskatedralen, et arkitektonisk mesterverk med Europas største glassmosaikk. For å få et overblikk over den nordlige byen kan man ta Fjellheisen opp til toppen (421 moh), speide utover og trekke inn den friske luften. Tromsø tilbyr også mange kulinariske måltider med stor variasjon. En rekke restauranter i Tromsø serverer fisk, skalldyr og kjøtt på tradisjonelt, internasjonalt eller nyskapende vis.
Museer:
Polarmuseet viser polarekspedisjoner og ishavsfangst i et hus fra 1830. Tromsø Museum Universitetsmuseet er et barnevennlig museum som fokuserer på natur og kultur i Nord-Norge. Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum viser kunst fra nord, og Perspektivet museum har en rekke utstillinger fra Tromsø og nordområdene.
Sesongaktiviteter:
September er for mange en favorittmåned for myggfri vandring , brevandring og jakt mens fjellet gløder av høstfarger. I oktober er imidlertid dagene korte, og snøen kommer og går. Da kan man eventuelt slå følge med tromsøværingene innendørs, og avvente til snøen laver ned i november. Da starter vintersesongen for fullt og man kan prøve isfiske, hunde- og reinsdyrsledekjøring, snøskutersafari, nordlysturer, ski i Lyngsalpene (1800 moh) og mye mer.

In Tromsø the days shorten by ten minutes each day during autumn, until finally, by mid-December, the inhabitants are left with just a brief window of daylight at midday. But as daylight diminishes, the city’s cultural scene receives a boost, restaurants are filled with noisy, happy people and the legendary nightlife ups the pace.
All this takes place under the stunning light display provided by the ‘grande dame’ of the night, the northern lights, or aurora borealis. Her green rays dance effortlessly across the night sky, exploding in pink and purple hues. However, the aurora borealis is fickle, and those keen to catch a glimpse of her should prepare for many hours out in the cold. The northern lights can be seen from August to April.
Festivals:
Tromsø plays host to one or two festivals each month. The upcoming period includes the following highlights:
Tromsø Silent Film Festival takes place in northern Europe’s oldest cinema in September, while October offers no less than three festivals – Tromsø International Literature Festival Ordkalotten, the electronica music festival Insomnia and the Polar Fokus photography festival.
Experiences:
Tromsø’s compact and colourful city centre features traditional wooden houses and modern flower arrangements and is easy to navigate. Why not visit Polaria, an arctic experience centre where you have the chance to see some of the seals and fish that inhabit the arctic waters? Or the Arctic Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece featuring one of Europe’s largest glass mosaics? For a panorama overview of the city, take the ‘Fjellheisen’ cable car (421 metres above sea level), take in the views and fill your lungs with the fresh air. In addition, Tromsø can offer a wide range of culinary delights. A host of restaurants in Tromsø serve fish, shellfish and meat prepared in traditional Norwegian fashion, with an international touch or with an inventive twist.
Museums:
The Polar Museum displays the history of polar expeditions and arctic hunting and fishing in a building dating back to 1830. Tromsø University Museum is a child-friendly museum centred on northern Norwegian nature and culture. Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum (The Art Museum of Northern Norway) displays works by northern artists, while the Perspektivet Museum offers a range of exhibitions from Tromsø and other northern Norwegian regions.
Seasonal activities:
September is for many the ideal time to visit Tromsø, as it offers an opportunity for mosquito-free hikes, glacier hikes and hunting in the mountains at a time when these glow in their autumnal robes. By October the days have become shorter, and it tends to snow from time to time. This is a good month to join the locals indoors, and wait until the snow begins to fall with full force in November. This is when the winter season kicks off, offering activities such as ice fishing, dog and reindeer-sleighing, snowmobile safaris, northern lights expeditions, skiing in the Lyngen Alps (1,800 metres above sea level) and much, much more.

I am a freelance translator and interpreter with a degree in translation and interpreting from Heriot-Watt University. I have two years' experience of working as an in-house translator and project manager.
I translate from Spanish, French, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish into English. I also provide copy-editing and language-check services.
I grew up in Sweden and have spent two years working as an in-house translator and part-time project manager for a Scandinavian translation company.
In the past two years I have had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of texts, ranging from financial reports, clothing catalogues and tourism brochures to insurance quotes, CVs, press releases and contracts.
