The right answer should be "favourite music", as this varies with me sometimes...
This may be Abba and Pink Floyd as well, with Queen and other pop in the meantime. Sometimes it is also classic.
So I answered "other" due to the lack of a correct option.

Since part of my translations are TV related (movies etc) I have those as "work music" so to speak.:)
While for other - non talking translations - I listen mostly to Italian music.

I replied "chill out music" but in fact I agree with Jerzy. I need any kind of music while translating, depending on my mood that day. =)

... basically anything that doesn't keep me isolated (by the way, to answer a previous question, I don't WATCH TV while working, but just have it on something fun that I can listen to when I choose to).
But - when I'm reviewing my translation or proofreading somebody else's: Absolute silence.

For maximum productivity: energizing, positive, high-BPM, uplifting, active music. (e.g. Van Hallen - Jump; Yanni - Niki Nana, Dune - Hand in Hand, Rednex - The Way I Mate, Vonda Shephard - Tell Him, Cliff at Christmas - The Millennium Prayer (mentally abstracting the lyrics for the last one)).

On new songs, my brain is distracted into analyzing the piece, so familiarity with titles helps. If you can take it, listening to the same favorite song on repeat ad infinitum makes for a great engaging background.

Absolute silence is an ideal seldom to be attained; it's what I would prefer, but not always what I get. I have often had to deal with an extreme amount of racket and distractions from many varied sources and have learned to tune them out.
Of course I do not complicate matters by turning on radios or music while I'm working.

But you may ask if such is possible. My answer is aboslute yes.
Here I live in a booneys, away from them all, say 23 miles to the nearest town whose population is only 3,000. Talk about a small town of rural Western America, this is it, but that's not all.

When I work in the night, all I hear is coyotes howling. So, well afterall there is some noise here too. But you see it is in very tolerable, if not manageable level (I cannot tell them

Silence is best, but for a job that isn't complicated, perhaps classical music or modern jazz - definitely nothing with a lot of talk - too distracting.

I can't even remember the last time there was absolute silence in this house.....and with all the kids on summer vacation at the moment, not to mention that they're armed to the ears with newly-acquired things from Santa to bash each other over the head with..... ::roll::

Depending on what I translate, I love listen to musicals while translating. My favourite working ones are Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables and in case I don't have to hurry or translate a non technical text, I really enjoy the mixture of music and work. But sometimes, when it gets too tricky, I turn the music off to fully concentrate in the text. But I already realized at university that I can better concentrate while listening to music because I have to concentrate harder on the transla... It's not completely true, but I answered 'Other'
My all-time favorite is Vivaldi's 4 Seasons. I ve been listening it since 1999. And I'm not a big fan of classic music.
Options: John Mayer, Coldplay, Diana Krall, CBRae, Massive Attack. Just a few days ago I also received a package of Puerto-Rican salsa. Most of it is not copyrighted, so there are even no mp3 tags, but it also works just fine.
But even these hardly compare to Maestro Vivaldi's masterpiece!

I answered Chill out music, but in fact the radio in my home office is tuned to a music station that mainly plays hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s almost non-stop.
Occasionally, when there's a song I particularly like, I turn up the volume, but usually the volume is turned down very low, so that the music becomes a kind of background noise that is not disturbing but keeps me from isolation.

especially O Rei, Roberto Carlos, or Caetano Veloso,
Marisa Monte, or Gal Costa, Fagner, or Zé Ramalho.
Or Chico Buarque or Milton Nascimento, or...well, lotso MPB.
Or Samba, Forró, Pagode, Sertaneja...
other times Vallenatos or other Latin American music.
Sometimes my favorite baroque music (Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, etc.)

Depends on how long I´ve been working/how fatigued I am,
and/or, the nature of the project on which I am working.
I wish I could find some good French music to listen to while working on French projects. At present, the only music I have in French are a few songs by the brilliant Canadian artist, Bruce Cockburn (one of my favorites for many, many years), and a couple of songs in French sung by Brasilian Minister of Arts and Education, Gilberto Gil. Oh yeah, and a couple of nice songs by U2 producer, Daniel Lanois.
Any recommendations? (I like folk music, bluegrass music, some alternative, the Grateful Dead, in addition to the above mentioned, if it helps).
I suspect there have to be, at the very least, more Canadian artistis I would like, but I haven´t been exposed to much. (I like Grapes of Wrath, I think they´re Canadian, but they sing in English...)
Although I LOVE the GD and American Bluegrass, and other American music (logico, sou americano), I don´t listen to much of that while working at all.
Once last Spring I was translating a contract from FR>EN while watching the World Cup, on Univision in Spanish, and conversing about the game, etc., with my wife in Brasilian Portuguese...not recommended... ▲ Collapse
