Hi everybody!

I am just busy getting started as a freelancer and wonder how best to proceed with invoicing.

Is it normal to send the translation before any payment has been made? Or do I first ask for my payment?

Also, I am located in South Africa and not sure what the best way for international clients is. PayPal is not very established here yet to receive money.

Would be great to get some insights.

Thank you a lot.

Some Insights Nov 26, 2012

To answer your question, yes it is common to receive payment after delivery.
Paypal isn't established in a lot of places. I would think Skrill would work for you.

Hope that helps.

Pre-payment is not very usual Nov 26, 2012

As with so many other service-orientated professions, the payment is done after the job is delivered. Sometimes, for example in case of a large job for a client you haven't worked for before, you could agree upon an advance payment, but the normal process is to bill after delivery. I usually invoice at the end of the month and cover up all the jobs that were done for that client. I prefer wire transfers, but that's also a thing that (in my situation) often is decided by the agency. A certain large agency even pays only with checks...

About VAT: as it is here, I have to be registered and have a VAT number that I have to write on my invoices. I'm not sure what the rules are in other countries, but I guess it's the same in many countries.

Good luck!

Lots of info here on ProZ.com Nov 26, 2012

Hello Kirsten,

Do please spend some time looking through this forum, and especially the "Getting Established" one, as there is already loads of information here. I think just about every question has already been asked a zillion times, but don't let that put you off it you can't find a particular answer.

I jump on the job quickly if pre-payment is offered since it indicates seriousness of the client.

It can also indicate a scam so I suggest Kirsten first read the Scam forum here at ProZ.
