Complicated phrasing critical part is IMHO: "without falling under its spell is an old dream, if one seldom realized." meaning doing it (envolving in the pleasures of chocolate) without becoming addicted to it (without becoming under its spell), which in itself is an old dream (of not becoming addicted), but that dream (of not becoming addicted) is one dream that realizes itself very rarely (seldom). I other words - we cheat our self in thinking (dreaming) that we will not become addicted to chocolate - when in fact we do.
