Redwater in cattle, and particularly in calves, strongly
suggests infection with Leptospira pomona. Calves as
young as two or three weeks of age can become affected.
Symptoms develop suddenly and include deep red urine,
decreased activity, rapid breathing, anaemia and pale,
slightly yellow membranes lining the mouth and vagina.
Young unweaned calves may be “off-colour” at one feed
and dead before the next. Not all severely affected animals
die, however, and the symptoms of redwater may pass
after a few days.

For about the last 10 years I have fed max of 2L per feed and when i started this it dropped dietory scours significantly ( use supastart or an equivalent)+ 5 ml performance gel at birth, and at any sign of being off colour, or after antibiotic treatment
have had a problem with rotovirus/ salmonella the last few years and have been advised by the vet not to take them off milk but give extra feeds of electrolytes at least 2 hrs after milk feed ( otherwise it inhibits milk digestion). Last 2 years have sprayed the shed with Virkon S and spread Stalosan F while calves are in the shed which has helped reduce the salmonella and Rotovirus calves get feed 2x daily till 3 weeks old then daily till weaning with adlib fresh water, hay and grain/pellts from day one. they get green feed once agistment is available which can vary from Jan till june ( in the drought). have found leaving calves on dry feed till 4- 6months old less trouble with parasites( worms /fluke) running at about 50% heifers ( want a loan of my straw spanner Rohan?)
