Aspiration of air occurs when a poor seal exists between the lower ladle nozzle and the ladle shroud. The flow of steel at high speed through the shroud results in a negative pressure, thus aspiration takes place.
The ZAAG ladle shroud system operates using a positive pressure supplied to a chamber located in the throat area of the ladle shroud. A ceramic fibre gasket that has a matching taper angle with the shroud and the collector nozzle is fitted into the shroud prior to casting. When the shroud is fitted onto the collector nozzle the system is designed to have an optimum penetration where the nozzle contacts above and below the chamber, creating a pressure tight seal.
