These are family expressions - I don't know if others use them!
My mother really does (or did until very recently - she's over 80) trim the edges of the lawn with the kitchen scissors. - She says she enjoys it, and there's no stopping her. The rest of us use a strimmer or keep away from gardening altogether!
I forget the origins of the peppermill expression, but we have a tendency to do odd experiments round the kitchen table, and this is a regular comment.
