I don't think there is any need to understand the 直 and the 曲literally here. Taken together, they mean "the length of the tracks ".

Extending and winding their ways......
It is about how subways go their ways.
For the whole sentence, you might say "Extending and winding their ways, the two subways..."
A subway can extend for some distances and make turns from time to time.
(Some may argue that "extending one's way" may not necessarily mean going direct lines, but it is more going direct lines than circling around. "Going direct lines" is not recommended here for it is not as beautiful considering the style of the writing.)

Yeah, context, right. Thanks, that was just me being a blockhead ;-).

It depends largely on what goes before the sentence. You may just say "While extending and winding their ways, the two subways.." or ""Extending and winding their ways, however, the two subways..." or However, the two subways, while extending and winding..

这个单词設計到不同文化对同一個事务的描述方式。其中文的意思就是来来往往。extending and winding their ways linguistically is a valid translation but functionally it doen't work. The readers will tend to think: how can a train run if the railway doesn't extend? The reader will also tend to think that the train runs in a zigzaging way if 曲往 is literally translated. It is not true.
Subways are usually running a in a "winding" way.
