中国科学院南京地质古生物所陈旭院士在接受记者采访时说，１９９１年在悉尼召开的第六届国际奥陶系大会上，以新任主席Ｗｅｂｂｙ教授为首提出了在全球范围内建立奥陶系三统六阶年代地层框架的革新方案，向推行了一百余年的英国传统、不完善的对比标准提出了挑战，得到了各国学者的响应。我国学者抓住了这一有利时机，组织了国际工作组，经过４年的努力，在我国浙江黄泥塘建立了达瑞威尔阶底界的全球界线层型（ＧＳＳＰ），这是我国第一个“金钉子”剖面。此后又在我国新疆柯坪大湾沟建立了上奥陶统底界的全球辅助层型剖面。目前奥陶系内还有三条界线层型正在紧张地开展研究，并都将在近期内提交最终报告。
按照国际地层委员会的安排，国际奥陶系分会有望提前完成系内界线层型确定的历史任务并提前进入下一个历史阶段。在新的历史阶段中将集中各国研究奥陶系的专家进行全球高分辨率的对比，同位素测年将与奥陶系的定量地层、生物地层研究相结合，此外还将深入研究全球奥陶系的古地理、古气候和古生态。这些又正是我国奥陶系研究的弱项。对于２００７年将在南京召开的下一届国际奥陶系—志留系大会，陈旭认为中国学者将面临巨大的挑战。
