Spanish term

exonerado

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Accounting e-Taxation, exemptions...
SPAIN % LATAM. I usually just treat this as synonymous with "exempt". However, in this set of e-billing software strings, that is what appears as the previous term on the list. So, the natural assumption is that there must be some kind of difference. I'm aware of the previous entries for this term, but none of them address my particular query, which is the difference (if any) between exento/exonerado. Or maybe is it just a belt-and-braces approach, and I'm overthinking it?

O G V May 6, 2023:
it could be exonerated pero sin dedicarle más tiempo a búsquedas, tengo por cierto que, en contexto de tasas e impuestos, exonerado es mucho más habitual, y diría que reconocible, que exonerated. Si bien las coincidencias que aporto parecen de fiar, no deja de resultar llamativo que no lo sugiriera ningún nativo antes... quizás haya una equivalencia mejor pero que valga exonerated si vale de verdad... saludos

So, if you agree with me, please translate as "exempt services total / exonerated services total".

exento o exonerado se diría, sin ser mi especialidad, que exento alude a algo previo o concedido de antemano, y exonerado, a algo posterior o tras alguna reclamación, proceso o similar...

Note from asker:
Like myself, the client doesn't understand the difference between exempt/exonerated, but is happy for me to use exonerated in the translation, so you will get the kudos points once the 24 hours is up.

tax-free; relieved (within a tax threshold limit)

exoneración : relief (yes), freeing, exemption (no), SPA/ENG Dictionary of the Language of Financial Reports, Ernst & Whinney.

Not a good idea to conflate threshold limits with exemptions, esp. for UK, ITA &SPA etc. inheritance tax purposes, though most ProZ SPA/ENG answers inadvisably do.
Example sentence:

IATE: es prever que la exoneración no se aplique solo a los derechos de aduana en to provide that the relief applies not only to customs duties

"exonerated" o "cleared of charges"

Note from asker:
Thank you. I was already aware of this usage in criminal law, but not as a partial synonym with "exempt" in this economic/financial/e-billing context.

tax exempt pursuant to an executive order

My translation derives from the excerpt below

Exención es la dispensa total o parcial del pago de la obligación tributaria, otorgada por la ley; y la exoneración es la dispensa total o parcial del pago la obligación tributaria, concedida por el Poder Ejecutivo en los casos autorizados por la ley.
Note from asker:
Possibly extremely correct, but unfortunately too long-winded for the context (software strings), where brevity is important.

zero-rated

InVAT parlance.

You do not include sales of exempt goods or services in your taxable turnover for VAT purposes. And if you buy exempt items, there is no VAT to reclaim. Exempt items are different from zero-rated supplies. In both cases VAT is not added to the selling price, but zero-rated goods or services are taxable for VAT — at 0%.May 18, 2022

Exemption and partial exemption from VAT - GOV.UK

0.0% Z (0%) – This is used where the supply of goods is Zero rated, such as children's clothes, basic foods, books and newspapers. Use this code for both Zero rated sales and Zero rated expenses – and if the supplier is not VAT registered.Jan 10, 2023

This might help (from Oracle):

Vouchers with a VAT Exemption
When your organization is VAT exempt, the VAT Exception Type is Exoneration. In this case, the transactions are treated as taxable at a zero-rate. This means that the transaction line would have a taxable type VAT Applicability (X) and a VAT code with a zero rate should be specified on the line. There is nothing that prevents you from entering a VAT amount on the header in this case—even if all of the lines are zero-rated. However, the VAT tolerance check occurs (unless you have opted not to use it), since the calculated VAT amount would be zero.
Note from asker:
I recall using zero-rated in similar contexts in the past, but don't remember what the Spanish term was at the time. For now, the client wants me to go with "exonerated". Thanks for the info.
