This is probaby the closest we can get in English and yes, I know it does not completely correspond to the French. But the other suggestions up do not fully reflect the French either.

Pour éviter de vous faire suivre une année parfois quasi "blanche", avec seulement deux ou trois matières "ratées", les universités vous laissent en général accéder à l'année suivante, à condition de repasser les matières non validées. Ce qui engendre un rythme de travail extrêmement exigeant !
Les étudiants concernés, parfois dénommés dans le jargon universitaire des "AJAC" (ajournés mais autorisés à composer dans l'année supérieure), pouvaient jusqu'à présent arriver en licence 3 (troisième année d'études) sans avoir validé certaines matières… datant du premier semestre de L1 ! Une situation extrême, en voie de disparition.

And for the second time, you confuse Ghits with MT, which it isn't. It's just a statistical showing of how often a term appears on the Internet, or doesn't. Ghits is NOT MT. Google Translate is !!!

If you look at the rules of any UK /US university for "being admitted in the next academic year" you'll find the term effectively used in academia.
admise avec dettes -> (provisional/-ly) admission/admitted with credits to make up
or
admitted with provisional/comditional credits
AFAIK it's used only to progress from one academic year to the next, NOT when admitting new students in Year one.
If you look at the rules of any UK /US university for "being admitted in the next academic year" you'll find the term used.
