Por encima de "capitán". Creo que equivaldría a eso. "Mayor" como tal no he escuchado en España, pero puede que me equivoque o simplemente lo ignore, al no estar especializado en lo militar.
En la Unión Soviética "capitán" llevaba cuatro estrellas pequeñitas, mientras que "mayor" ("comandante", en nuestro caso) llevaba una algo más gorda (pero no tan gorda como la de un general).

OJO: si la traducción es exclusivamente para España se podría cambiar por comandante.
Efectivamente, en el Ejército de tierra español equivale a comandante (OF-3 en la escala OTAN, ver ref. 1); pero en muchos otros ejércitos hispanohablantes existe el rango "mayor". Y en el contexto ESeu también estamos familiarizados (es decir, sabemos que es un rango militar), y creo que en tu contexto no habría confusión posible, así que yo no me complicaría la vida y lo mantendría.
