SB: IAVD

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Cardiology
Spain: dschg summary on 82 y.o. male S/P primary angioplasty after his 1st episode of chest pain: "AP: Alergia a AAS. AIT hace 5 años. Arteriopatía periférica con claudicación intermitente a unos 400 metros y acrocianosis en MMII. HISTORIA CARDIOVASCULAR: no presenta. SB: IAVD. No tiene angina ni disnea habitual, si bien no realiza grandes esfuerzos por la claudicación intermitente que presenta."
SB could be "sinus bradycardia" but pulses given in the record are 70's and 80's (plus, this is the HISTORY section)... and for IAVD there is a previous discussion at
http://www.proz.com/kudoz/spanish_to_english/medical_general... (scroll WAY down to see all contributions). I've also seen "incomplete AV dissociation" for IAVD but, again, none of this seems to fit context. Any insights appreciated!

A (very belated) thank you, Joseph... yes, I'm familiar with tremedica but hadn't looked there on this occasion. LJ

SB = situación basal Hi Lesley. I've come across SB before and had trouble translating it. It's not exactly "social history" (I don't think). And I agree with the I = independiente. And Constantinos got the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) part of this right. So these abbreviations are telling the reader that in his "situación basal", the patient is independent in carrying out his activities of daily living. I found SB in the tremedica glossary ... here's the link if you haven't been to this phenomenal resource yet:

Yes, I'm sure that's officially what the acronym stands for. But this is a notation in a medical record, so it has to be reporting something about the patient. Has to be making a statement about the patient with respect to ADL... I mean, if you read "ADL Index" in the history in a patient's chart, what would that be saying? The references given are not related to medical records. I'm confident this is local shorthand for independence in ADL... I think we can safely intuit this, as long as the record as a whole supports it (which it does, in this case). Thanks.

I am not convinced it does mean "independent" - I have only found a Portuguese ref. to indicate this would be so. In Spanish it stands for "Indice/Instrumental". See:

Lesley Jackson (X) (asker) Oct 2, 2010:
ah... so the "I" in IAVD probably is for "independiente" (in Eng we would record/report the pt as "independent in ADL"). Thanks, Liz, for the SB part!
Lesley Jackson (X) (asker) Oct 2, 2010:
Right, Liz... hence my question. And to clarify... I made the quote look/sound like it all runs together (I wasn't looking at the source doc). But, actually, there are 3 separate headings: AP, HISTORIA CARDIOVASCULAR, and SB (followed by ENFERMEDAD ACTUAL, etc.) Sorry to have confused things... so I believe Constantinos is on the right track. But SB? "sociobiológico" or something like?? Obvious now what it refers to... thanks.
liz askew Oct 2, 2010:
I don't see how this can be about heart disease as it says the patient has no cardiovascular history.

Acute Infarct of the Right Ventricle

This is history and is obviously dealing with a cardiac patient. I wonder if the Spanish could be Infarto Agudo del Ventriculo Derecho. But on the other hand, it says no h/o cardiovascular disease and this was his first episode of chest pain (tho' he may have had a silent infarct and it was only picked up on ECG or imaging). I'll have to give the "SB" a bit more thought and that might make something click.
