Source text - Italian Le indagini preliminari iniziano nel momento in cui una notizia di reato perviene (per esempio tramite esposto, denuncia, querela) al Pubblico Ministero, che la iscrive immediatamente nell’apposito registro. Contestualmente viene iscritto anche il nome della persona alla quale il reato è stato attribuito, qualora il nome sia noto; altrimenti tale nome viene iscritto nel momento in cui se ne viene a conoscenza.
Nel caso di specie, anche se le indagini sono cominciate già nel 2007, il nome degli indagati è stato individuato ed iscritto nel relativo registro solo a metà del 2009.
Dalla data nella quale il nome della persona cui il reato è attribuito è iscritto nel registro delle notizie di reato decorre il termine di sei mesi entro cui il Pubblico Ministro deve chiudere le indagini, a meno che non chieda al Giudice per le Indagini Preliminari di autorizzare una proroga del predetto termine (per altri sei mesi, una o più volte, secondo il reato oggetto di indagini).
Allo scadere del termine, ai sensi dell’art. 415-bis c.p.p. il Pubblico Ministero, se non ritiene di chiedere al GIP l’archiviazione del procedimento, notifica all’indagato e al suo difensore l’avviso di chiusura delle indagini preliminari.
Translation - English The preliminary investigations commence when a notification of crime is sent (for example by a statement, report or complaint) to the Public Prosecutor, who immediately enters it in the appropriate register, together with the name of the accused, if known; otherwise this name is entered when it is known. In this specific case, although the investigations began in 2007, the name of the accused was only discovered and entered in the relative register in mid 2009.
From the date when the name of the accused is entered in the crime notification register, the Public Prosecutor has six months in which to complete the investigations, unless the Judge for the Preliminary Investigations is asked to authorise an extension to this deadline (one or two extensions for another six months, according to the crime under investigation).
Pursuant to article 415-b of the Code of Criminal Procedure, once the deadline has passed, the Public Prosecutor shall send the accused and their legal representative a notification of closure of the preliminary investigations, if it is not felt necessary to request that the Judge for the Preliminary Investigations archive the file.

I have more than 10 years' experience as a freelance translator working from Italian/French/Spanish into English on a variety of legal and financial texts. It is now a major motion picture directed by Daniele Lucchetti, winner of 5 Davide di Donatello awards. Before entering the translation field, I was an academic specialising in Italian intellectual history. I hold a Ph.D. in Italian and French from the University of Toronto and am a fellow of the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Storici in Naples. After spending 3 years in Naples at the institute, I wrote the first English language history of the city, entitled "In the Shadow of Vesuvius: A Cultural History of Naples" (London: IB Tauris, 2005, 2009), which was recently published in Spanish by Almed (Cordoba-Madrid).
