The common perception is that Europe follows the lead of the United States in online advertising. In many fields this is true, however in 2006 Europe actually leads the US market in one important aspect: Europe now spends more money on search engine advertising than on display ads.
The rise of search engine advertising in Europe reflects the changing habits of European businesses and consumers. Europeans are increasingly being won over by the convenience of online shopping, and search plays a key role in driving those transactions. Internet research also plays an increasing role in the offline purchase of homes, vehicles and other high value items.
Search engine advertising is becoming more mainstream in Europe as it is increasingly understood and adopted by advertisers. Marketers like search because the price is directly related to performance. The immediacy and testability of search engine marketing lowers the barriers for European advertisers to try the medium. Many European advertisers have taken their first steps on the Internet with search marketing.
While we often speak of Europe as one market, it is in fact a collection of different markets - all at different levels of development. The UK online ad market rivals that of the US in sophistication and spending. In Hungary, advertisers purchase search engine keywords at a fixed price from one local search engine, reserving them for six months to a year.
This report highlights the unique characteristics of search engine advertising in Europe, with a focus on the UK, France and Germany. We interviewed a number of European advertising industry figures including publishers, advertising agencies, creative agencies and the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB).

Eine ebenso zunehmende Rolle spielt die Internetsuche beim offline-Erwerb von Häusern, Fahrzeugen und anderen hochwertigen Gegenständen.
Suchmaschinenwerbung etabliert sich in Europa weiter, weil sie von den Werbetreibenden zunehmend verstanden und angenommen wird. Verkäufer mögen die Suche, weil der Preis im direkten Verhältnis zur Leistung steht. Die Unmittelbarkeit und Überprüfbarkeit der Suchmaschinenwerbung senkt bei europäischen Werbekunden die Hemmschwelle, dieses Mittel auszuprobieren. Viele europäische Werbetreibende haben mit dem Suchmarketing ihre ersten Schritte ins Internet unternommen.
Während wir von Europa oft als von einem Markt sprechen, ist es in Wirklichkeit eine Ansammlung verschiedener Märkte – alle mit einem unterschiedlichen Entwicklungsstand. Der englische Markt für Onlinewerbung ist in punkto Kultiviertheit und bei den Ausgaben eine Konkurrenz für den aus Amerika. In Ungarn kaufen Werbetreibende Schlagwörter bei einer lokalen Suchmaschine zum festen Preis und reservieren sie für ein halbes bis zu einem Jahr für sich.
Dieser Bericht hebt die besonderen Eigenarten der Suchmaschinenwerbung in Europa hervor, mit einem Schwerpunkt auf England, Frankreich und Deutschland. Wir haben eine Anzahl von Repräsentanten aus der europäischen Werbeindustrie befragt, darunter Verlage, Werbeagenturen, Kreativagenturen und das Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB).
