I'm having trouble seeing how these words make sense in the contexts of their sentences. There's probably an obvious solution I'm missing but I don't see it. Here's the context:

Все посольства за двое суток эвакуировались, кроме меня и представителя Ватикана, но ватиканец сказал, что я здесь остаюсь не в качестве нунция, а в качестве просто священника, если что, я уйду, там рядом с его посольством.
- К ему.
- Нет, не к ему, а к священникам. Он так и сделал. Когда они вошли, он из посольства ушел и там жил с ними.
- А Ватикан ... был? Или со стороны немцев был?
- Нет, он был там наоборот. Немцы были тоже с той стороны.
