trademark symbol and generic

Yes, that's what I said in my answer, and it's true in French trademark law. It's not in US trademark law, where "generic" has a very different meaning. That's what made me wonder if this text had been translated into English from French or another Romance language (or written in English by a native speaker of French or other Romance language).

So "generic," in this text, actually means "product category" or "type of product." Or if you want to stay very close to the original text, then "générique de marque."

A trademark legally protects a brand name, the symbol establishes if the brand is registered with the government (or will be in the future) as a trademark, and the generic is the description of the product that is trademarked. For example, "Bayer" is a trademarked brand and the generic is "aspirin." I read a lot this morning to understand the "generic" part because it's definitely confusing as a term. The generic is needed so that the trademark is protected from becoming a generic term itself. For example, Xerox makes photocopiers, but people started saying "Xerox this report for me" instead of "duplicate this report for me on the Xerox copier" and now Xerox is a verb instead of an adjective. Also, "aspirin" was originally a brand of headache medicine and now it is a generic term.
I found a toothpaste box in my drawer this morning that says "Parondontax TM Daily Flouride Anticavity and Antigingivitis Toothpaste" where "Parodontax" is the trademark, "TM" is the symbol and "toothpaste" is the generic.

This isn't about generic trademarks, because genericness is an abstract concept, not a thing you can print on a label. And if it is about the label on a generic medication (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generic_drug), it still doesn't make sense because the generic-ness of medication is also a concept, not a thing that can be printed on labels.

This can only mean two things:

(1) MAYBE (but I doubt it) the name of the chemical compound (for instance, ibuprofen is the generic name for the drug sold under marks like Advil). I doubt that that's what this means, though, since the word for that is "compound" -- I don't see why they'd call it "a generic."

(2) What I said in my answer: "a "générique de marque" is:

"Partie de l’identifiant d’un produit dont le nom se compose de deux éléments. Dans ce cas, le nom de marque est considéré comme la première partie de l’identifiant du produit. La seconde partie est constituée par l’identification de la catégorie de produits>/b> incluse dans la désignation dudit produit...."

IOW "product category."
