Hi,

I have been sent an .idml file to translate. I use MemoQ Translator Pro, which allows me to work with InDesign files. However, the .idml file contains several rather long tables that I have also been asked to translate. The client doesn't have the originals used to create the images. So I can only work with the .idml file or the .pdf of it the client sent me.

Is there a way to translate the text in the images?

Thanks!

Scan/OCR or do by hand Jun 8, 2017

You can try to scan and OCR the tables (after cropping them out of the images).

if that doesn't work, they will have to be done manually.

Both cases require additional fees to be paid by the customer. When that happens, I charge on a time-spent basis.

Software Tabula (if created from electronic text) Jun 8, 2017

You can try using an open source software called Tabula, only if the tables were created from electronic text; it won't work with scanned images.

Does client have a PDF to send? Jun 8, 2017

A workaround to manipulating the text in images in an InDesign document is to get the PDF from the client (since he doesn't have the original images or links).

Of course, any translator who is not a typesetter or who doesn't have Adobe InDesign should tell his clients that only the editable text inside an IDML file is translatable, and that text items in graphics should be handled separately by someone else.

Two-screen monitor Jun 8, 2017

I always work with image file translation. Instead of printing as hard copy, I use two monitors to work simultaneously. One monitor is for translation, the other is for checking with image file.
