A couple of years ago, in an essay in The New Yorker, the critic and writer Kathryn Schulz pointed out that we cannot see most of the things that rule our lives. Magnetic fields, electric currents, the force of gravity all work unseen, as do our interior arbiters of thoughts, inclinations, passions, psyches, tastes, moods, morals, and — if one believes in them — souls. The invisible world governs the visible like a hidden nation-state.
The same is true of writing. You come up with an image, phrase or sentence. Your head snaps back, and you say to yourself, Where did that come from?! I’m not talking about automatic writing, though that may be part of it. I mean the entire range of invisible forces that produce and affect the work. There are things the writer sees that the reader does not; things the reader sees that the writer does not; and things neither of us ever sees. These, the most entrancing of the lot, have a power of their own. Like the ghost of Jacob Marley, they lead to unimagined, sometimes frightful yet fruitful destinations.
What the writer sees and keeps from the reader is the simplest of the three, because it deals mainly with craft. The planting of clues in poetry or prose, for instance. If we’re doing our job, readers have no idea that what they have just read — a name, a place — will be picked up later in the piece, heaving with meaning. The clue is invisible as a clue. In a sense, the whole novel, play, essay or poem is invisible. The reader does not recognize the work (what writers call “work”) that goes into the choices we fiddle with and blunder into before landing on the right ones. That’s as it should be. “If it does not seem a moment’s thought,” said Yeats, “our stitching and unstitching has been naught.”
Neither does the reader ever see the first draft, or the second, or the 19th. That the writer knows and recalls these drafts, even if dimly, has an invisible effect of its own. As a stanza or a character becomes better wrought, the writer more fully comprehends her or his intentions with the piece. An early draft is the child that becomes the man, who is more deeply understood for the author having witnessed the book’s strange, meandering growth every step of the way. Fitzgerald’s first stabs at “The Great Gatsby” had Tom, Daisy, Jordan and Gatsby going to a baseball game, a narrator named Dudley (or Dud) and two green lights at the end of Daisy’s dock. Hovering discarded phantoms.
And the writer knows what has happened in a story before the story begins. All short stories are over before we read the first line. The story itself constitutes the key moment, the consequence of the invisible story that preceded it. Salinger had to know all about Seymour Glass before Seymour wound up in Florida, when we meet him in “A Perfect Day for Bananafish.” By that time, everything is too late.
What does the reader see that’s invisible to the writer? Mainly, his or her own life. You write a book and send it into space. Go, little book. You have no idea where it lands — what effects it will have on a reader, who is invisible to you. There is that lovely moment for a writer when someone will say, Your book changed my life. (Lovely, that is, unless it changed it for the worse.) Writers do not see their readers, who remain a secret, with secret lives. Our transaction is unseen. We only hope that what we do is so generally true that those who read us will embrace our efforts as part of their stories. We write to an invisible world on which we depend. If you happen to recognize yourself in someone or something we create, that’s all good. But the writer will never know that, or you. You are Harvey, our invisible, six-foot (we hope, gentle) big-eared friend.
But the greatest, and in some ways, the most satisfying invisibility is that world which neither writer nor reader will ever see, and yet knows exists. Jules Feiffer tells the story of starting his cartoons for The Village Voice. Before his first strip came out, his mother — who terrified and tyrannized Jules — warned him that if there were a terrifying, tyrannizing woman in the strip, it better not look like her! Confident that his drawing looked nothing like his mother, Jules assured her she was safe. When the strip came out, Jules writes in his memoir, he stared at it. There was his mother.
Who knows where anything comes from in writing? Seamus Heaney tells of sensing a destiny in his poems directed by God, but whatever forces are credited, there’s little question that most writers feel some inspirational push or tug connected with the work. And the inspirations have mysterious maps. Many a writer has started out certain of a particular direction only to change course midway, as though a ghost’s hand took the tiller.
I am not unaware that my writing has improved in the nine years since our daughter’s death. My work is sharper now, and more careful. Happily would I trade all the books I’ve written in those nine years for one moment with Amy alive, but since that bargain is impossible, I write to fill the void her death created. And something else: Since I believe it was Amy’s death that led me to write more seriously, she lives with me invisible. I write to see her.

صرحت الكاتبة والناقدة كاثرين شولتز في مقالتها عبر مجلة نيويورك قبل عدة أعوام بأننا غير قادرين على رؤية أغلب الأشياء التي تتحكم في حياتنا. فالمجالات المغناطيسية والتيارات الكهربائية وقوة الجاذبية غير مرئية وهي مشابهة بذلك أفكارنا وميولنا الشخصية وشغفنا و أذواقنا ومزاجنا وأخلاقنا وحتى أرواحنا - إذا كنت ممن يؤمنون بالروح. فالعالم الخفي يتحكم في العالم الظاهر كدولة قومية خفية.
وينطبق الأمر ذاته على الكتابة. فعندما تتخيل صورة أو جملة أو شبه جملة يتراجع عقلك ويتساءل "من أين أتيت بتلك الجملة؟" لا أعني هنا الكتابة التلقائية على الرغم من إمكانية أن تكون جزء من ذلك. ولكن أعني النطاق الأوسع لجميع القوى الخفية الممكنة التي تنتج وتؤثر في الكتابة. فهناك بعض الأمور التي يراها الكاتب وحده و يعجز القارئ عن رؤيتها والبعض الآخر لا يراه الا القارئ بينما توجد بعض الأمور التي يستحيل رؤيتها على كلا من الكاتب والقارئ. والنوع الاخير هو الاكثر فتنة ويملك قوة من نوع خاص. فهذا النوع يشبه إلى حد كبير الشبح جايكوب مارلي في رواية"أنشودة عيد الميلاد" لتشارلز ديكينز حيث يوجه الكتابة إلى اتجاهات غير متوقعة ومخيفة بعض الأحيان ولكنها مثمرة.
فما يراه الكاتب من القارئ هو النوع الأبسط لأنه يتمحور حول المهارة مثل مهارة إخفاء الرموز في الشعر أو النثر على سبيل المثال. فإذا أجاد الكاتب عمله فلن يستطيع القارئ أن يتعرف على الرموز فوراً حتى يكمل قراءة العمل مما يزيد من عمق المعنى. فالرمز مخفي. أي أن العمل سواء كان رواية او مسرحية او مقال او قصيدة هو مخفي أيضا. فالقارئ لا يعي العمل والجهد المبذول من الكاتب لاختيار تلك الرموز والتفكير في الكثير منها قبل العثور على الرموز المناسبة. ويقول الشاعر الإنجليزي ويليام ييتس حول كتابة الشعر "اذا لم يبدو الأمر وكأنه مجرد لحظات من التفكير، فإن حياكتنا (للشعر) ستبدو كالعدم".
فالقارئ لم يطلع على النسخة الأولى أو الثانية أو التاسعة عشر ولكن الكاتب يعرف ويتذكر هذه المسودات والتي تمتلك بدورها تأثير خفي على العمل. فمع تحسن شكل أسطر القصيدة أو شخصية الرواية يزيد فهم الكاتب او الكاتبة لأهداف العمل. فالمسودة الأولى هي بمثابة الطفل الذي يصبح رجلاً و يكون الكاتب متفهماً للعمل بعمق حيث شهد جميع خطوات التطور.
وبالاضافة الى ذلك فان الكاتب على اطلاع بما حدث في القصة قبل بدايتها. فجميع القصص القصيرة تكون منتهية قبل أن نقرأ السطور الأولى منها. فتشكل القصة اللحظة الرئيسية وهي نتيجة لقصة غير مرئية (خفية) وقعت بالفعل. فتوجب على الروائي الامريكي جيروم ديفيد سالينغر أن يعلم جميع الامور حول شخصية سيمور جلاس قبل أن يصل سيمور الى فلوريدا في قصة "يوم مثالي لاصطياد الموز". فعند وصوله الى فلوريدا كان الوقت متأخراً بالفعل.
ولكن ما الذي يراه القارئ ويكون خفي بالنسبة للكاتب؟ الإجابة بشكل أساسي هي حياة القارئ. فالكاتب ينشر كتابه ويطلقه الى العالم ولا يعلم أين سيحط رحاله أو التأثير الذي سيتركه على القارئ الذي لا يراه. هناك بالطبع تلك اللحظة الرائعة للكاتب حيث يخبره أحد القراء بأن كتابه كان سبب في تغير حياتهـ/ـا. وهذه اللحظة جميلة باستثناء إذا كان الكتاب تسبب في تغيير حياة القارئ الى الاسوء. فالكتاب لا يرون القراء وحياتهم التي بمثابة السر. فالكاتب يطمح أن يكون عمله حقيقي بشكل عام بحيث يتقبله القارئ ويجعله جزءاً من قصته الخاصة. فالكاتب يعتمد على ويكتب الى عالم خفي وإذا تمكن القارئ أن يرى نفسه في عمل الكاتب فهذا أمر رائع. ولكن الكاتب لن يعلم هذه الحقيقة أبداً. فالقارئ هو بمثابة شخصية هارفي الصديق الخفي العملاق (والذي نأمل أن يكون لطيفاً).
ولكن النوع الأعظم والأكثر أرضاءاً على الاغلب من الجوانب الثلاثة الخفية هي الأمور المخفية عن الكاتب والقارئ في نفس الوقت ولكن يعلم الطرفين بوجودها. ويحكي الكاتب ورسام الكاريكاتير الامريكي جول فيفر قصته عندما بدأ رسم الكاريكاتير في صحيفة ذا فيليج فويس. وقبل طباعة أول كاركاتير من أعماله حذرته والدته التي تخيفه كثيرا بأنه إذا كان سيرسم امرأة مخيفة وظالمه فمن الأفضل أن لا تبدو مثلها. وأكد جول لوالدته بأنه رسوماته لا تمت لها بصلة ولكن عندما طبع أول كاركاتير كتب جول في مذكراته أنه حدق في تلك الرسمه ورأى والدته.
من يعلم مصدر الأشياء في الكتابة؟ فالشاعر الأيرلندي شيموس هيني عبر عن إحساسه بالقدر الموجه من الآله ولكن باختلاف أنواع القوى يتفق الجميع أن أغلبية الكتاب يشعرون بالإلهام والارتباط بأعمالهم. وهذا الالهام يرسم خرائط غامضة تدفع الكاتب لتغير مساره السابق في منتصف العمل وكأنما استولت يد الشبح على زمام الأمور.
أعي تماما بأن كتابتي تحسنت خلال الأعوام التسعة الماضية منذ وفاة أبنتي. فكتابتي الآن أكثر حدة وأكثر حذراً. وبكل سرور سأتخلى عن جميع الكتب التي نشرتها خلال هذه الاعوام التسعة مقابل لحظة واحدة مع أبنتي آيمي. ولكن لاستحالة هذه المساومة، فسأكتب ليمتلئ الفراغ الذي خلفه رحيلها. وسأكتب لأنني إذا كنت أعتقد بأن وفاة آيمي جعلني أكتب بجدية أكثر فهي إذن تعيش معي بشكل خفي. وأنا أكتب كي أراها.

I am a full-time freelance translator and my working languages are Arabic <> English. I am based in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
My specialization is in online and media translation due to my previous experiences. I have worked with websites' content in English and Arabic several times. I was a co-founder and translator for the Masamaria website http://msamariakids.org/?lang=ar. Moreover, last year I translated the content of an app called Quran Academy from English to Arabic. Currently, I am translating the content of Nusuki website from Arabic into English.
My media translation comes from my experience as a translator in Makkah Newspaper for two years. Being a member of the translation team, I had the opportunity to arrange for Media coverage for several events. Moreover, I translated, reviewed, and created content of several types.
I also have experience in translating business translation as I have been working as a freelance translator with Strategic Gears company.
I decided to pursue my studies in translation and I am currently a full scholarship master student at Effat University and I will graduate by June 2018. I joined the 2-year master's program (Master of Science in Translation Studies) offered by the College of Science and Humanities in 2017. I was a voluntary interpreter at "The Intercultural Exchange: Language, Literature, and Translation Conference" at Effat University.
