Befehlsbausteine

German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Computers: Software / User manual
German term or phrase: Befehlsbausteine
This term appears in a user manual "Workpiece Data Storage-Bausteine".

The client provided a list of abbreviations/terms for documentation purposes.

In that list, "Spannung (U) des Treiberbausteines" is translated as "Voltage (U) of the driver component".

So, I understood that they prefer to translate "Baustein" as "component".

Well, my problem is that my understanding of the meaning of this "building block" in this manual/context is not quite that of a component or module. There are different German words for that ("Komponente" or "Modul").

I'm providing more example of the use of this "Bausteine" accross this manual, hoping that you'll help me figure out the best translation for the "Befehlsbausteine":

So, is "command block" OK?

Code templates

Explanation:
In fact, they invented different uses for „Bausteine“ on different levels of complexity. “Command Block”, in my opinion, would express the opposite: An aggregation of “commands” (in the widest sense of the expression), combined to be “used” as a whole; while the “Baustein” is best represented as a piece of Lego®. The Befehlsbaustein appears to be a fragment, a code-fragment that will be used to assemble a (why not) Command Block in your understanding.

I am using template, to emphasize the reusability aspect, because I “feel” that “fragment” is to light and non-commital. But I am not a native English-speaker.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, I am not sure, that I use this system in the right way...

But Building Block is absolutely great in this context. Make sure that your customer is of the same opinion, though. It's them who spread „Bausteine” all over the place and maybe they just love the word.

Example sentence(s):
  • Assemble your own commands by combining our code templates.

Asker: Interesting! Wouldn't you use "Code-Vorlagen" if you mean "code templates"? I've been doing web programming for a while, and "template" is widely use related to layout.

Asker: How about the literal "Lego®" style translation as "building block", quite literally, as it is not the whole block, but a fragment of it?

Asker: @philgoddard: "Befehl" is obviously "command". The issue here is with the "Bausteine" ...

neutral  philgoddard: I don't think you can translate "Befehl" as "code".

-> You can translate it as command. Like in “a line of program code“. The Baustein comprises some of these, and here I am 100% sure.

Asker: This issue is that there is the German word "Modul" for module. Why would they use 'building block' if they meant 'module'?

disagree  keypunch (X): The difficulty comes from the degree of atomicity in the diverse expressions that we discuss. You need input from the customer to be sure.

agree  Lancashireman: The facility comes from the degree of modularity in the convergent expressions that we discuss. No need for input from the asker here.
