音译 Nov 25, 2016

Boring:
Dull:

http://news.ifeng.com/a/20161126/50320090_0.shtml

The China's translators employed by the royal house started to render Trump into 特朗普, I'm quite certain, long before he appeared to be a big fish even in a small pond. Please see 《世界人名翻译大辞典》 published by 中国对外翻译出版社 in 1993. Therefore, they did or are doing their job, proper or improper, merely by the book. It occurs to me no one in the trade seemed to ever raise his eyebrows, until now. What's more, our great, glorious, and ever-correct princes never give a hoot about it. Over time, it turns out to be praxis out of the question.

Now that he grows unexpectedly and really into a considerable fish, the president-elect at the moment, by the vast Pond, by chance, out of destiny, or whatever, some professionals begin to express an interest in why it can't be put in a better way, what ought to be, how or if it's possible to un-cook what's been long cooked. Not under the infallible leadership of any princes on the Mainland China, Uncle Sam can do whatever he considers fit, for better or for worse.

Given the political correctness, my two cents' worth, consequently, is, if you, or your clients, are under the Five Stars, pick the above; if under the Stars and Stripes, take 川普; if living luckily elsewhere, you're free to choose.

I agree it's one of the ways of killing time and a good way to share academic views, but its prospect for re-casting the cast dice looks fairly dim on the western side of the Pacific. Simply put, no dice.

In the same vein as the above: would love to see how you all would handle an EN>CN translation of the towns in the link above. These really are all small towns up in Maine; somebody either had a very good sense of humor or quite a yearning to travel.

I went to college in Maine, and it gets confusing--my last year of college I was getting ready to move to China (Asia) to work, and told one of the ladies who worked in the dining hall that I would be working the next year in China. She looked at me in a rather bored way and said something like "Oh, right down the road."

But seriously, you'd have to think of a different translation for "China", wouldn't you? Although then again, if you took the allusion to the country of China out all together, readers would be missing the fun. And what about Mexico/ the rest of the countries?

And China (Maine) is actually a pretty nice place, with a lake and everything.

(I just did a very quick search of Baidu and couldn't find anything on this, but if anybody finds a link with Chinese translations, I'd be very interested to see it)

How did the Town of China get its name?

In 1818, the Town of Harlem was incorporated as the Town of China. Its voters had chosen the name Bloomville. Maine was then a part of Massachusetts and in those days Boston, the legislative seat, was a week’s journey by horse and wagon. Harlem’s representative was not allowed to use the name Bloomville as there was another town in the United States by that name. With hometown sentiment 200 miles away and no telephone or telegraph, it was entirely up to him to present a new name. As the hymn “China” was a great favorite of his, he presented that name.
